Patient Care

Wilmot Cancer Institute to open new Geneva office

Sep. 4, 2015
UR Medicine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute opens its Geneva office in a new building this month at 511 W. Washington St. Beginning Sept. 15, patients who need medical oncology, hematology and chemotherapy/infusion services will be seen at the new building, which is about twice the size of the current Geneva office.

The expansion will accommodate the growing number of patients who can be seen at this office, and it helps to ensure high-quality cancer care closer to home for patients in Geneva and surrounding communities.

“The building creates a brighter, welcoming environment for our patients,” said Dirk M. Bernold, M.D., who has been caring for individuals with cancer in Geneva since 2006. “It will allow us to continue providing compassionate care with a personal approach while ensuring access to cutting-edge treatments.”

Designed by Hanlon Architects and built by Massa Construction, the new Wilmot Cancer Institute Geneva building is a $920,000 project. The building features:
  • Nine infusion chairs and a private infusion room.
  • A laboratory draw station.
  • Four exam rooms.
  • A conference room with videoconferencing capabilities that will allow physicians to collaborate with other cancer experts to develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Convenient, on-site parking.
“Cancer care is more complex than it has ever been before, and it requires a coordinated team with expertise in many disciplines to identify the best course of treatment for each individual patient,” said Jonathan W. Friedberg, M.D., M.M.Sc., director of Wilmot Cancer Institute. “Our office here in Geneva brings Wilmot Cancer Institute’s precision medicine approach closer to home for patients and families who might otherwise have to travel an hour or more for care.”

In addition to medical oncology, hematology and infusion services, patients at Wilmot Cancer Institute Geneva have access to:
  • Clinical trials, which are available for a variety of cancers at different stages and help lead to the next generation of therapies.
  • Advanced diagnostic testing for certain cancers, which helps physicians to tailor treatments more precisely to a patient’s needs.
  • Outpatient palliative care services to help with pain and symptom management, as well as decision-making, throughout the treatment process.
Wilmot Cancer Institute has been expanding the services it provides in the Finger Lakes region to accommodate the needs of patients closer to where they live and work. In 2013, Interlakes Oncology and Hematology, P.C., which has had an office in Geneva since 1996, joined Wilmot’s network. Last year, Wilmot Cancer Institute Geneva had approximately 3,300 visits and performed 4,300 procedures. The Geneva office employs a staff of 20, including physicians, nurses, lab technicians and others. In Ontario County, Wilmot also provides medical oncology and radiation oncology services at Sands Cancer Center, located at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
