A Winter Skin Reset for the New Year

Jan. 9, 2026

Just as nature rests before spring, your skin can too. A few months of gentle, restorative care can make a meaningful difference.

Why Does Your Skin Need Extra Care in the Winter?

Dry skin and dehydration are common during winter due to cold outdoor air, indoor heating, and long, hot showers that strip away natural oils. These environmental conditions, plus stressors like holiday plans and indulgent foods, can often result in:

  • increased redness and sensitivity
  • dull, irritated, and reactive
  • an increase in rosacea flares

It’s tempting to add new products or reach for scrubs and stronger acids to quickly fix flaking or dullness, but this often worsens the problem. Instead, post-holiday skin recovery should focus on repairing and maintaining the skin barrier.

How To Adjust Your Skincare Routine for Cold Weather

  1. Avoid over-drying and over-exfoliating.

Chemical exfoliants and scrubs can further disrupt an already stressed barrier, worsening dryness, redness, and sensitivity. Moderation allows the skin to regain balance and comfort.

  1. Opt for a heavier moisturizer.

Your skin constantly loses hydration through a process called transepidermal water loss (TEWL). When skin is compromised by low humidity or the loss of natural lipids, it may feel tight, flaky, red, or sensitive, even without changes to your routine. Supporting the skin barrier with heavier, occlusive moisturizers helps slow TEWL, lock in hydration, and give skin time to repair itself, especially overnight.

  1. Don’t skip retinol this time of year.

Despite common myths, retinol is still a great product choice for your nighttime routine, even in winter. Retinoids support collagen production, cell turnover, acne control, and overall skin texture.

With generally lower sun exposure in winter, photosensitivity may be less noticeable, though daily SPF remains essential year-round. If needed, buffering retinol between layers of moisturizer—the “sandwich method”—can reduce irritation while preserving benefits.

  1. Remember: skin recovery takes time.

This winter, give yourself permission to slow down and approach your skincare goals with patience and consistency.
