Fillers vs. Botox

Fillers vs. Botox: Which One Is Right One for You?

Two of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments are often viewed as
interchangeable: fillers and neuromodulators, like Botox. Fillers restore lost volume and
help enhance facial contours with more “fullness.” Neuromodulators help relax wrinkles
caused by facial movements, such as frowning or smiling. While both are used to minimize
fine lines, they actually serve different purposes.

Dermal fillers can be used to replace volume or, as biostimulators, to promote collagen production. Depending on the concern, they can be injected directly under wrinkles to lift sagging skin, promoting collagen production and replacing lost volume. Common filler
brands include Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra.

Neuromodulators are a category of injectable treatments that work by relaxing targeted muscles to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines — the kind that form from frowning, smiling, or squinting. The most common brands of neuromodulators include Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.

With something as personal as your skin, it’s important to understand the differences and consult with a highly trained cosmetic dermatologist to decide which treatment is best for
you.

Benefits of Fillers

  • Add volume to your skin and restore fullness that has been lost with age
  • Help smooth out wrinkles when your face is at rest
  • Can plump lips, contour cheeks, and fill deep folds
  • Some fillers, like Radiesse and Sculptra, also stimulate collagen production for longer-lasting results
  • Brings results within 10-14 days, with continued improvement in the following weeks

Benefits of Neuromodulators

  • Helps relax facial muscles to reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Is best used for wrinkles that appear during facial movements (smiling, frowning, squinting, etc.)
  • Brings results within a few days, with continued improvement for a few weeks after treatments
  • Should be repeated every 3-to-4 months for best results

Whether you decide to try fillers or neuromodulators, like Botox, depends on your specific cosmetic goals. Regardless of the treatment you choose, pairing it with a good skincare routine and protecting your skin from the sun are always great choices.
