Feb. 28, 2025

Wilmot Cancer Institute recently welcomed well-known breast cancer surgeon Lori Medeiros, MD, to the Pluta Comprehensive Breast Care Program. In addition to her role as a breast surgeon in the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Surgery, she will serve as Wilmot’s Associate Medical Director, Regional Surgical Services and Director of Cancer Surgery Business Development. These newly created positions will help expand Wilmot’s reach and improve patient access to comprehensive breast cancer care across the region.

Medeiros began seeing patients at Wilmot’s Pluta and Webster locations on Feb. 25. Prior to joining URMC, she had been at Rochester Regional Health since 2008 in joint clinical and administrative roles.

Medeiros is well known to patients and families in the Rochester community, having served as Executive Director of the Breast Service Line and Executive Director for Cancer Business Development at RRH. She founded and developed a respected Breast Center of Excellence there and now brings that expertise to Wilmot’s Pluta Comprehensive Breast Care Program.

A native of Canada, Medeiros earned her medical degree and completed her specialty training at McGill University in Montreal. She also holds an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She is board-certified by both the American Board of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is certified in breast ultrasound through the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

“Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a many different practice settings from single payer, to private to employed and in many administrative roles. This journey has allowed me the opportunity to see things from both the patient and physician perspective as well as that of other key stakeholders,” said Medeiros. “This new partnership with URMC is exciting from all perspectives and will ensure my patients receive not only meaningful and timely care but also access to cutting-edge scientific and research opportunities in breast care.”

Medeiros helped to develop techniques in oncoplastic surgery for breast cancer patients that improve cosmetic outcomes and is currently working with a team at Rochester Institute of Technology to develop a thermal imaging technique for early breast cancer detection. At Wilmot, she plans to conduct research that helps patients with decision-making and gets to the practical side of a cancer diagnosis, including identifying patient preferences about treatment.

In her other newly created roles at Wilmot, Medeiros will work closely with Wilmot’s Medical Director, Daniel Mulkerin, MD, to shape regional and service line strategies. Her expertise as a surgeon complements Mulkerin’s background as a medical oncologist, and she will focus on expanding surgical services in the region and strengthening collaborations with surgical colleagues at the Wilmot Cancer Center’s main location on the URMC campus. She also plans to use evidence-based research and the latest information in planning treatment decisions with patients, to ensure the best experiences and outcomes for all of Wilmot’s patients in a 27-county upstate New York area.

Her arrival strengthens Wilmot’s position as a leading breast cancer program regionally and in Monroe County. Her extensive experience as a high-volume breast cancer surgeon will help drive growth and innovation in breast cancer care.

“Bringing Dr. Medeiros on board represents our commitment to enhancing breast cancer care and research throughout the region,” Mulkerin said. “I’m excited to collaborate with her as we continue to regionalize surgical cancer care and further integrate our medical and radiation oncology services at Wilmot.”
