Life-Changing Trip Strengthens Resident's Passion for Dentistry and Global Outreach
Traveling to Uganda with Build Your Smile Dental Foundation was a life-changing experience for EIOH prosthodontics resident Dr. Mahshid Torabi. The experience deepened her passion for dentistry and strengthened her commitment to serving those in need.
Q. Describe some of the conditions you worked in:
A. During our time in Uganda with Build Your Smile Dental Foundation, we provided dental care in settings that were quite different from what I was used to. We set up our clinics in community spaces such as churches, using tables and benches to create makeshift treatment areas. Patients traveled hours or even days to seek care, and their patience and gratitude were truly humbling. Despite the challenges, the sense of community, resilience, and appreciation made this experience incredibly rewarding. It was a reminder that smiles have no borders, and compassionate care can make a difference anywhere in the world.
Q. Was this experience life-changing for you?
A. Absolutely. This experience shifted my perspective not just on dentistry but on the impact of service and human connection. The genuine appreciation of the patients we treated was incredibly rewarding and left a lasting impression on me. Many had endured dental pain for months or even years, yet they greeted us with smiles, patience, and kindness. Seeing how much relief and joy even a simple treatment could bring reinforced my belief in the power of compassionate care. It reminded me that, as healthcare providers, we have the ability to make a real difference in people’s lives, even beyond the clinical setting. This experience deepened my passion for dentistry and strengthened my commitment to using my skills to serve those in need.
Q. What stood out to you the most?
A. What stood out the most was the kindness and resilience of the people. Despite the limited access to dental care, every patient we treated was grateful, patient, and full of warmth. Their appreciation for our work was overwhelming, and it made me realize just how life-changing dental care can be. I was also deeply inspired by the dedication of our team, who worked tirelessly to ensure that every patient received the best care possible.
The experience reaffirmed that dentistry is more than just treating teeth—it’s about restoring comfort, confidence, and dignity.
Q. Would you recommend others going on a similar trip?
A. Without a doubt—yes. If you ever have the opportunity to participate in a global outreach program, take it. These experiences challenge you, teach you and ultimately change you. They give you a newfound appreciation for your profession and allow you to make a tangible impact in communities that need it most. Beyond the clinical work, it’s an opportunity to connect with people, learn from different cultures, and grow both personally and professionally.
Q. Thoughts about the Build Your Smile Foundation?
A. I have immense respect and admiration for the Build Your Smile Dental Foundation. Their commitment to improving global oral health is truly inspiring. They go beyond just providing treatment—they focus on education, sustainability, and long-term impact. Being part of their mission was an honor, and I hope to continue supporting their work in the future.
Q. Other Thoughts?
A. A Special Thank You! I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Ercoli, Dr. Barzilay and Dr. Chochlidakis for their guidance and support, which made it possible for me to take part in this life-changing experience. Their encouragement and dedication to education and professional growth have
played a significant role in my journey, and I truly appreciate the opportunities they have provided.
