EIOH Resident Spotlight - Dr. Ethan Barkin

Growing up in Dix Hills on Long Island, Dr. Ethan Barkin never imagined just how deeply Western New York would shape both his personal and professional journey. After completing undergraduate studies in Biological Sciences at Binghamton University and earning his DDS from the University at Buffalo, he found his way to Eastman Institute for Oral Health, where he became a proud resident in Periodontology.
During the residency program, he immersed himself in clinical care, research, and leadership roles, all while building lasting relationships and discovering a new sense of home in Rochester. Dr. Barkin presented his research at several national meetings – including the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research, the Academy of Osseointegration, and the International Team for Implantology. He also co-authored a paper that is under review for publication, titled “Comparison of Conventional to Temporarily Covered Epithelialized Palatal Grafts Around Dental Implants. A Pilot study.”
But, he says, the recognition he is most proud of is being appointed Periodontology’s Chief Resident, and adds that it has truly been a pleasure representing the program.

Q: Why did you choose Eastman?
A: Simply, Eastman Perio is the best post-graduate program in the country. It is an extremely well-rounded program, offering excellent clinical exposure, teaching experiences, and active research participation.
Q: Best memory of your EIOH residency?
A: It’s not so much one moment or a specific memory. I love being in the Perio/Prostho Seminar room on a Friday afternoon at about 4:45-5:00pm. There is general aura that comes from a group of really hard-working residents after having just finished a long week; if I could bottle that feeling, I would.
Q: In what way did your Eastman experience allow you to grow professionally and/or personally?
A: My faculty members have provided me with incredible support to explore my curiosities and expand my network professionally. Through my time in the program, I have developed relationships with industry personnel at both local and national levels. I believe that I am in a fantastic position to enter this next phase of my career. Through encouragement to advance my surgical techniques, documentation quality, and comfort with oration, the faculty have instilled a strong sense of confidence in me.

Q: Favorite thing about EIOH / most important thing you learned in your residency?
A: I feel that the interdisciplinary approach to treatment that has been cultivated at Eastman is one of the strongest aspects of the program. In the Perio Department we are fortunate enough to have close proximity and a prolific working relationship with our sister department in Prosthodontics. It reminds me of being a part of a team. Many of my co-residents, not just in the perio department, have become close friends. I look forward to maintaining these relationships for years to come.
Q: What are your next steps after graduation?
A: I will be staying in Rochester, entering into private practice. I also look forward to returning as a part-time associate professor in the Department of Periodontology.
Q: Any advice for a new Eastman resident?
A: “Only a closed mouth doesn’t get fed.” Ask questions, be curious, push yourself. This is likely the final stop on a long journey of formal education, please make the absolute most of it. You are surrounded by some of the brightest minds in a field that you dedicated your career to. Take advantage of it.
Q: What do you love about the Rochester area?
A: Rochester has become my home. I love the sense of community. You can make this city as big or as small as you want. My girlfriend and I love going out to eat. Our favorite place is Lucky’s, you can find us there most Wednesdays.
Q: Other than dentist, what career would you choose?
A: Prior to dental school, I was a personal trainer and a bartender.
Q: Your biggest fear?
A: The dark.
Q: The one thing you can’t live without?
A: 6-0 PGA suture with a T-28 needle. If you know, you know.
