EIOH Researchers Rank Among the Top Scholars Worldwide

Jul. 24, 2025

A recent global analysis by ScholarGPS has recognized Eastman Institute for Oral Health as home to some of the world’s leading researchers in oral health and related specialties.

Using advanced algorithms, ScholarGPS evaluated the scholarly impact of some 30 million researchers from 120,000 institutions across 200 countries. The assessment considered each individual’s contributions across 14 broad fields, 177 disciplines and 350,000 specialties.

Among those ranked, nine EIOH faculty members placed in the top 0.7% worldwide, 15 were ranked in the top 3% and another 12 were recognized in the top 5%--a reflection of the Institute’s depth of expertise and sustained research excellence.

This prestigious acknowledgment by ScholarGPS is facilitated by advanced data mining and artificial intelligence and underscores EIOH’s significant contributions to various facets of oral health.

Scholar GPS assesses scholars not only based on all publications across their lifetime but also based on just the past five years. In this way, fair comparisons can be made between early-career and more established scholars regarding recent quality, productivity and impact.

Developed over several years by a distinguished panel to overcome the limitations of existing ranking methods, ScholarGPS also calculates separate scores for the number of times a scholar cites his/her own work and the number of authors for each publication.

Additionally, ScholarGPS provides separate rankings for various fields and disciplines among the academic institutions globally and within the institution. The fields and disciplines are reviewed over a lifetime and the prior five years.

This breakdown shows how some of the University of Rochester’s key programs-including dentistry—ranked.

Dr. Basil Bibby (right) shaped EIOH’s research legacy, securing early NIDCR grants and sparking innovation among faculty and residents.

Throughout its history, EIOH has consistently ranked in the top NIDCR-funded institutions. The ranking is especially significant because the University of Rochester’s dentistry and oral biology research arm – through Eastman Institute for Oral Health-- is much smaller compared to the other high-ranking institutions.

Research topics are wide ranging: clinical research projects in the EIOH specialty departments and in the Rochester community, classic University of Rochester oral microbiology and salivary research, oral pain and translational and basic research topics interfacing with the University of Rochester School of Medicine research laboratories.

EIOH’s Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences and the Clinical and Translational Research Core encompass a wide variety of areas, including oral infectious diseases, dental caries, salivary diagnosis and therapy, craniofacial development, orofacial pain, periodontal diagnosis and therapy, implants, tooth enamel, materials, laser, nerve injury and pain modulation, and practice-based research, among others.
