Dr. Jill Patel (GPR ’22), a native of Utica, NY, was eager to return to the upstate area after spending  four years in dental school in Philadelphia, PA. Coming to EIOH for a GPR residency in Rochester was the perfect chance to reconnect with her roots and be closer to family. Now back in Philadelphia, she applies her extensive training and hands-on experience from the GPR program at two dental practices: Bucks Dental Associates and Dentistry by Design.

Q: In your current position, have you been able to apply what you learned during your GPR residency?
A: GPR allowed me to gain experience in socket preservation (bone grafting), implant placements, crown lengthening, and surgical extractions, amongst the more common general dentistry procedures (crowns, dentures, restorations, exams, SRPs).

Q: What were your favorite things about your GPR residency?
A: I loved the mentorship, the close-knit group of residents, and being in Rochester. My favorite rotation was Urgent Care. Doing an insane amount of extractions was a lot of great experience, and working there with dentists from other dental programs gave me so many opportunities to learn different techniques. The fast-paced environment had its learning curve; the amount of growth I saw there so quickly was incredible.

Q: Would you recommend the GPR residency program?
A: I would recommend the GPR because of the great work-life balance, the experience I gained, and the lifetime of friendships I made not only from my program but from the various other programs that EIOH has. I loved how diverse the rotations were so that we could hone into each skill constantly for so many weeks at a time; by the time we were done with a rotation the skills we learned felt like second nature!
