Dr. E. David Appelbaum, a devoted member of EIOH part-time faculty, has passed away. He was 86.

For more than 55 years, Dr. Appelbaum taught in both the Periodontics and AEGD departments, impacting the education of countless students and residents. His unique style of teaching was appreciated by both residents and faculty.

“David was strong-willed and demanding of his residents, yet had a wonderful sense of humor and made learning fun,” said Dr. Michael Yunker, EIOH professor, who was trained by Dr. Appelbaum 52 years ago at Genesee Hospital. “He was always respected for his straightforward attitude and his attention to detail. He was an excellent clinician and very aware of the research.”

At Eastman, Dr. Appelbaum was involved in training Periodontics residents for more than 50 years, and his course was an integral part of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program. “Dr. Appelbaum, through his involvement in the AEGD Program, was critical to the successful CODA approvals over the years,” said Dr. Hans Malmstrom, chair, AEGD and General Dentistry. “Even when he was not well, he still maintained his weekly involvement by supervising residents’ presentations.”

“Dr. Appelbaum was deeply committed to the education of the EIOH residents,” said Dr. Neha Mithia (Perio ‘25). “He was very responsible in his role as a teacher. He was a nice guy and a good friend!”

“Dr. Appelbaum’s legacy of excellence in education and patient care will always be remembered, and we remain grateful for his commitment to the EIOH community,” added Dr. Eli Eliav, EIOH director.

Dr. Appelbaum earned his DMD degree from Tufts University in 1962 and a certificate in Periodontics from New York University College of Dentistry in 1966. He volunteered in the Navy as a dental officer for Marine operations in Japan and Vietnam from 1962-1963 and achieved the rank of Captain. He established a thriving periodontal practice in Brighton where he served the Rochester community for more than five decades.
